President Nelson Mandela, the expedition patron, on hearing that the South
African team has reached the summit on 25 May 1996:
"I just want to say that the news came to us as a real surprise, and also a
cause for jubilation. Because of the fact that the conditions on top there were
not conducive to this achievement. But our children did very well indeed."
The National
Assembly of South Africa pays tribute to the First South African Everest
Expedition.
